William Edward Norris letter to Mrs. Tremayne [manuscript], 1902 August 8.

Norris thanks Mrs. Tremayne for her hospitality and tells her that he loves her old house and garden, and that it has been photographed in his mind. He reports that his journey home was comfortable except for the company of an old man, who got on in Nutley and regaled him with the story of his life.

William Edward Norris was born in London, the son of the chief justice of Ceylon. He was educated at Eton, and accepted to the London bar, but elected not to practice law so he could concentrate on a literary career. He worked as a journalist and wrote for periodicals, publishing his first novel in 1877; his second novel was an enormous success, and he wrote steadily for the rest of his life.
